NI School Debating Champions!

Luke McWatters and Curtis Irvine scored an impressive victory on Friday evening in the final of the Northern Ireland School Debating Competition. In a thrilling debate against Abbey Grammar School, they proposed the motion that ‘This House believes N Ireland’s obsession with the past has become an obstacle to progress.’ The Senate Chamber of the Stormont Parliament building was packed for the occasion, with supporters from BGS filling the government benches. It was a closely fought debate, against a very talented opposition, but the judges decided that BGS had made the stronger argument. This consolidates the school’s proud record as the finest debating school in Northern Ireland. No school has reached the final or won the cup more often. The Bangor Grammar School Debating Society will celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2017.
