Hockey Club Tour to the Bath Festival
A 1st XI squad, containing a number of Year 11 players who will be challenging for places on next year's 1st XI, took part in the prestigious schools' hockey festival in Bath over the weekend of 20 - 22 March 2009.
Their opening match against Victoria College, Jersey, took place shortly after they had arrived and, still not yet fully acclimatized perhaps, they lost 3 - 1.
They played two matches on the following day against Bryanston School and Newcastle-under-Lyme School. They won both, the first 3 - 1, the latter 5 - 1.
On the final day, they ran up against one of the best four schools in England, Worksop College, and collapsed 8 - 1. This was not surprising given the sheer quality of the opposition and the relative inexperience of the team. All the more credit to the boys for the other results.
The 1st XI coach, Mr Dawie Holley, commented, "The results were certainly mixed, but all the boys benefited greatly from the experience. It was good for them to test themselves against the best schools in England and develop their skills through really competitive matches. We can look forward optimistically to next season."
The boys stayed right in the middle of Bath, one of the most beautiful cities in England and played their matches in wonderful surroundings. The weather was perfect and, all-in-all, it was a most enjoyable trip.
Thank you to Mr Holley and Mr Jonathan Todd for their hard work coaching, organising the trip and accompanying the boys and well done to the boys themselves.
