Athletics U14 District Team Championships

District U14 Team Competition
Monday 18th May 2009

Having secured their place in the District final the previous week ,the six athletes from year 9 met at Ballykillaire unsure of what competition to expect.

The team got off to a winning start through Ben Dempster in the 100m. This was followed by a strong 800m race by Andrew Mellon. Unfortunately Connor Crymble registered two no throws in the Shot and failed to finish in the top three, but Matthew Coffey gained a respectable fourth in the Javelin.

In the meantime Michael McComb was obviously over the disappointment of the Ulsters, winning the Long jump in fine style. Then Darren Morton, a mere novice, went on to win the High Jump in convincing fashion.

Approaching the 4 x 200m relay we were sure we were in the mix but as the standings were announced in reverse order, 8th to 2nd, there was no mention of us. That is because we were in 1st place with a unattainable lead of 32 points!

However, the boys were not going to take the foot off the pedal, indeed quite the opposite. With a great display of power and raw pace they romped home in the relay, taking their total to 40 points and victory.

This qualifies the team for the Ulster U14 event on Monday 1st June at the Antrim Forum.

Well done, boys!
